First, the guitar is the important object, the best shredding guitar is Ibanez, the neck are thin and unpainted, the actions is low, and the pick up isn't so dirty. Schecter are also good too, but its not necessary that you use Ibanez or Schecter.

Second, you need to know that you are holding your pick correctly. If you really want to play fast, theres only way to hold the pick. In between your thumb, and curl your index finger up. With a bit of the pick sticking out. It will feel uncomfortable for the first time, but you will accustomed by exercise that.

Third, Turn on your guitar and put a distortion to it. keep the bass low, and keep the treble high, it will gives you a thick sound to get a great sound to shredding. Also if you can put on a compressor.

Fourth, you must learn tremolo pick, just on the second string, or any fret. Tremolo picking is basically playing the same string. Over and over again, and really fast. Don't worry if you can't play fast for the first time. it takes practice to play fast you know.

Fifth, this is really hard, and trully it hard to get all the way down. Its called sweeping, and if you learned it, you will love it, when sweeping, your picking hand is basically going up, and down ina sweeping motion. When you start sweeping, you must sweep with three strings figure.
